12 Months - Weeks 1 and 2

Our Family Watching the Saint's Game
Words? He can say bye-bye, ma-ma, da-da, day-day (Daisy), hey and I think that is it...
Food? He is eating all big boy food. He loves PB&J, mac and cheese, yogurt, bananas and peaches. He likes other things but those seem to be his favorite at the moment.
Activities? He loves his push toys and goes 50 mph around the house with them! He loves his ball popper and his cars/trucks.
New Things? Says ma-ma all the time especially if he is tired or hungry.
Achievments? He went to school for the first time without crying on his birthday.
Developments? He can take a few steps and stands all the time. His main mode of transportation is by walking along anything and everything in the house.
My Toddler This Week? Sometime soon, your baby may actually earn the right to bear the title "toddler" — by taking his first shaky steps. (If your 12-month-old doesn't, no worries; the range of development for this skill is wide — anywhere from nine to 18 months is totally normal.) What can you expect from these early wobbly walks? Your amateur walker will probably have an uneven gait that makes him look like he's always about to teeter over (and he often will!). And, like a mini Mr. Magoo, he's going to bump into furniture, walls, pets, and people. That's to be expected. After all, he's working so hard at putting one foot in front of the other that he won't always notice what's right ahead of him. Plus, at just one year old, he's still farsighted and doesn't yet have the depth perception of an older child or adult. Add in an adorable lack of coordination, and it's no wonder he crashes from time to time. While it's important to take some basic safety precautions (carpeted floors, no-slip socks, thorough childproofing), try not to stress over his inevitable (and numerous) tumbles. Sure, your little one may cry if he falls, but chances are he's more frustrated than injured. Remember, he's got built-in bumpers (that chubby tush and cushy diaper) and a still-flexible skull designed to take a lickin' and keep on tickin'! The bottom line: He'll likely forget his trips and tumbles long before you do. One thing you may notice is those tiny toes turning inward (known as pigeon toes, toeing in, or in-toeing). Unless this condition persists for longer than six months, or interferes with his walking, it's nothing to worry about and will likely correct without any intervention. Ditto for bowlegs, toeing out, tiptoeing, and flat feet. All are normal and typically self-correcting (but do speak with your child's doctor if you have any concerns — if, for example, these conditions seem to be causing pain or preventing your child from wreaking his usual havoc). Have fun…and happy chasing!

Bye Bye, Baby Food!

Today marks one week since Daniel has had baby food! He has been a pig and really adjusted well. My biggest concern with this whole transition is making sure he is getting all the nutrients he needs. I have not really had to worry too much about this with the baby food just feed him meat, veggies and fruits. Now I have to plan and cook his meals. One obstacle we are facing is that he does not like whole milk or rice milk by itself. He will not drink anything but water out of his sippy cup. We are going to try the EnfaGrow formula for toddlers and see how that goes. Pray he will drink it out of a cup so we can ditch this bottle! We are down to one 8 ounce bottle at night time and he gets most of his Calcuim, Zinc and Vitamin D from yogurt and cheese, which he loves. Here are a few things he likes...

  • Cereal Bars
  • Yogurt (any kind)
  • Vita-Muffins
  • Cheese
  • Macaroni and Cheese with Ground Chicken
  • Peanut Butter and Jelly
  • Green Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Carrots
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Turkey Sandwich Meat
  • Bread
  • Peaches
  • Bananas

Okay, so now that I have listed these, I realize he likes quite a bit of healthy food...maybe I shouldn't worry so much about the nutrients part...

Play date with Jude!

We are so lucky to have great neighbors who also have a little boy that is close to Daniel's age. We see each other all the time and it is so nice to just be able to walk next door and have a play date for mommies and babies! Here are some pictures from yesterday!

Peanut Butter and Football!

Daniel had a PB&J sandwich for the first time Monday! He loved it!
Monday night we all got dressed in our Saint's Gear! Unfortunately, Daniel had to go to bed before the game even began. It was a great game except for Reggie Bush getting injured! Not a great way to start the season...

12 Month Check Up

This morning we had Daniel's 12 month check up with Mrs. Debbie. We talked to her about moving to strictly solid foods, alternatives to whole milk, why they have added the Hepatitis A vaccine into the routine shot schedule and discipline. I love that I feel I can always ask her questions and she takes the time to answer them. Here are some key points from his appointment.

  • He weighed 18 pounds on the nose.
  • He is 28 inches long.
  • He has hit all the milestones for this age.
  • We are going to try Rice Milk.
  • He is ready to stop the baby food so we are going to do more big boy food.
  • We agreed to test peanut butter on his cheek and tongue before giving him large amounts. She said give it 6 hours. Maybe he can have peanut butter tomorrow!
  • She suggested a couple of parenting/discipline books so we stopped on the way home and bought "The New Dare to Discipline" by Dr. James Dobson We are also going to buy the "The Well-Behaved Child: Discipline that Really Works!" by John Rosemond, they just did not have it today.
  • He got 5 shots today, which is by far the most he has every received at once.
I guess that is about everything. He cried for a minute while getting the shots but has been fine ever since.

Does he look like Mommy or Daddy?

All of us at 1 Year...It is hard to tell but my eyes are blue in that picture.

It's Been a Year...

A year? I can't believe it has been that long. Our baby boy has grown and changed so much over the last year. He is no longer that helpless little baby that constantly needed my undivided attention, or the little stinker who cried every night for a couple of hours. He is now a little man who likes to explore everything. Cabinets, doors, trash cans, dog bowls, specks of lint on the carpet, these are the things he finds the most interesting. He will look up and me and say "baa daa maa day"? For those of you that don't speak Danglish, it means "mommy what is this, can I eat it"? He does all this with such a serious face and I can't help but smile at him. It usually makes both of us start laughing. He loves his toys and he has a blast playing with Daisy (aka pulling her tail). He helps put his arms in his shirts while getting dressed and hurries to the bath tub as soon as he hears the water start. He has so much personality and loves to make everyone laugh. I often look at Brian and say, "we did good", he agrees.

I can honestly say this has been the BEST year of my life. So much has happened but most importantly our son has brightened our days!

Here are some pics of Brian, Daniel and me at Chuck E Cheese celebrating Daniel's birthday.

52 Weeks

1 Year!
3 Months!

How Old?  52 Weeks (11 months, 4 weeks and 2 days)
Weight? We will find out Saturday
Clothing? Nothing has changed...still 9 months pants and 12 month tops!
Sleep? He has been taking naps better lately. 1 nap in the morning for 45 minutes to 1 hour and 1 afternoon for 1-1.5 hours.
Toys? He got so many new toys for his birthday, I don't even know where to begin. He loves his puzzles and books. He also likes his cars and balls. He had woke up fussy the last two mornings because he is wanting to play!
Eating?  I gave him 2 ounces of Whole Milk in with his bottle this morning to see how his tummy would handle it. I tried just milk in a sippy cup and he did not like it much. We are going to work on getting rid of the bottle and going to Whole Milk over the next week or 2.
New discoveries? He is standing all the time now and takes a step here or there.
Words? He can say "bye-bye" and "hey" but not very often. He blabbers ALL the time.
Things we did this week?  We went to Greenville, SC to see Aunt Lisa Wednesday through Friday We had Daniel's birthday party on Saturday! Can't believe he will be a year old tomorrow...
New Things/ Things to Watch For? Around now your baby's play will probably start shifting from mastering his fine motor skills (he's got that thumb-and-forefinger grasp down pat) to exercising larger muscles. Some children this age have an attention span of two to five minutes for quiet activities — though your baby's favorite games may not be all that quiet. Your baby probably thinks it's fun to push, throw, and knock everything down. He'll give you a toy as well as take one, and he likes games where he can put things in containers and dump them out again. This works well with blocks in buckets or boxes and with pots and pans, which he can nest inside one another. He'll thrill to the loud sounds of those pots and pans banging together, too.

First Birthday Party!

We had Daniel's 1st birthday party yesterday. I did not realize how stressful planning and setting up everything is. I have thrown baby showers, bridal showers and adult birthday parties but they did not compare. My anxiety level was sky high Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. If you are not sure how high that is I am sure you can ask Brian or my mom and they would be glad to tell you. I just wanted everything to be perfect and all the guests to have what they needed. Isn't that what every mom wants? After all the anxiety and rushing around was completed we had a wonderful time. The only negative things all day were that 2 great friends could not make it because of being sick.
Daniel took an unusually long nap Saturday morning so he was in a great mood. Everyone started showing up around 12 and had pizza, played in the bounce house and the playroom. All the kids had a blast!

We then opened presents and had cake!
The Grandparents with the Birthday Boy!
Daniel was the cutest Birthday Boy I have ever seen!
As much as I was excited for it to get here, I can't believe it is over...
on Wednesday, our baby boy will be a toddler!

A special thanks to my mom, dad, Andrew and Kayla for helping us set up everything and clean it up!

Soon-to-be 1 Year Old!

Can you believe he is almost 1????
How Old?  51 Weeks (11 months, 3 weeks and 2 days)
Weight? Close to 18 pounds?
Clothing? We went to Stride Rite with Mia and Poppy and they bought Daniel 2 new pairs of shoes. We had his feet measured and he wears a size 4. He is in a 9 months pants and a 12 months top/ one piece. Since they start slowing down on growth at this point he will probably be in this size for a while.
Sleep? He is giving me a really hard time when it comes to naps lately. I am lucky if he takes two 45 minutes ones.
Toys? He found a top that he loves again. It was a toy he got for Easter and loved it then. It was hidden in his playroom until I cleaned it out.
Eating?  He is still taking 2 bottles a day and I don't really know how about going to whole milk in the next couple of weeks...any tips would be appreciated. He tried a hot dog...I know it is the biggest chocking hazard ever, but I diced it and took the skin off. He loves it!
New discoveries? He stands for really long periods of time now. Especially with his new shoes on! I just know he will be walking anytime now!
Words? dabadaba!!! AHHHHHH!!! lol
Things we did this week?  We did so much! We vistited Alycia and Cael, went to school, had lunch with Uncle John and David Edmonson, played with Jessica and Jude, had dinner at Mimi and Pops' house with Aunt Jess, Uncle Chris and Logan, cleaned the house, had a first haircut and got our first real shoes!
Daniel's First Shoes from Stride Rite!
New Things/ Things to Watch For? As he approaches his first birthday (can you believe it?!), your child is showing plenty of signs of leaving babyhood behind and becoming a more independent toddler. Even if he can't yet stand, cruise along the furniture, or walk solo (many babies don't start walking until they are between 13 and 15 months old), he's likely working on these skills in his own way, and will be on his own two feet soon enough. (And he can probably crawl at lightning speed if he's determined enough to get somewhere.) In terms of play, he can now join in on games like patty-cake and peek-a-boo, instead of just being a passive (but enchanted) observer. Right now, your 11-month-old baby is learning to take care of himself, in small but significant ways. For example, he may be able to swig his milk (breast milk or formula, that is — he's still not ready for cow's milk yet) from his own cup, and feed himself much of his own dinner (with a generous allowance for his hair, bib, lap, and the floor). When you dress him, he may push his own fists through his sleeves if you guide them, or stretch out his leg for his pants or socks as you prompt him.
And — music to your ears! — he is finding his voice. Many babies will utter their first word (beyond the magical "Mama" and "Dada") this month or next. Even if you can't discern a specific word, notice that your baby's babble sounds more word-like than ever. He's trying his hardest to imitate the sounds around him and to communicate with you. The best way to help him, of course, is to keep talking. But he also needs you to listen and pay attention. Respond to your baby's gibberish as if he's a master of elocution and enunciation. Wait patiently while he talks, answer him in kind, and then give him a chance to chime in again. When he tries to tell you something (with speech or gestures), support his basic attempts, providing more vocabulary: "Yes, you see a doggie! He's a nice, brown doggie. Look how fast the doggie can run." When you ask a question or make a command, give your baby a helping hand toward comprehension. If you say, "Can I have that blue block, please?" open your fingers expectantly or point to the desired object. If you make it a game, learning will be more fun for both of you.

Time for a haircut!

Daniel's hair has been shaggy for a little while now. I have been debating getting it cut but I just didn't want to believe he was old enough for that yet. Well I gave in today and figured I would have it cut before his birthday party. I found a place online called Snip It's that is opened on Sundays and specializes in kids haircuts. The first one we went to was closed so we ended up driving to another one 45 more minutes away. Needless to say it was a long drive for a 5 minute haircut!

Onto the topic...he did great! Did not really cry just fussed a little towards the end. He looks like a little boy now instead of a baby! Here are a few pics!
